What is Bread Pudding?
Bread pudding is a popular dessert in many countries around the world. It is thought to have originated in England in the 13th century. Bread pudding was originally a way to use up stale bread.
Today bread pudding can be made with a variety of different breads, including white bread, challah, brioche, and French bread. It can also be flavored with a variety of different spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
For today’s recipe, we are adding bourbon to favor this yummy dessert.
Bourbon Bread Pudding
To begin making this bourbon bread pudding recipe, gather your ingredients.
Start by cutting the bread into approx. 2-inch cubes and toss with the half and half.
Set aside while you prepare the other ingredients.
Use a saucepan to melt your butter and then remove from heat.
Add both sugars and vanilla while stirring until smooth.
Beat the eggs and add to the mixture. Continue to stir until well mixed.
Next, pour this mixture over the bread cubes and toss.
Finally, pour into the greased baking dish and sprinkle with dried cherries. Press cherries and bread until under liquid.
Cover the baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for approx. 1 hour or until golden brown.
Bourbon Dessert Glaze Recipe
While the pudding is baking, begin to make the bourbon dessert glaze.
Add butter to a saucepan and melt of low heat. Remove from stovetop.
Next, add bourbon and confectioner sugar, stirring until smooth.
Add heavy cream to the mixture and mix until creamy.
Bourbon Dessert
Now it’s time to complete the Old Fashioned bourbon dessert.
Remove the baked pudding from the oven and pour the glaze over the top evenly.
Garnish with premium cherries if desired.
Let stand for 15 minutes to allow the glaze to set.
Note: You can easily reduce the servings if you want a smaller bread pudding. The recipe makes 12 servings, so I split the ingredients in half and baked the bread pudding in a 8 x 8 baking dish with good results.
The Old Fashioned Bourbon Bread Pudding is best when served warm.
You can add whipped cream or vanilla ice cream to the top if desired. However, it’s yummy, just as it is.
Is Bourbon Glaze Safe – Substitute with Apple Cider?
WARNING: DON’T Serve Old Fashioned Bourbon Bread Pudding Recipe without reading the concerns about the alcohol content in bourbon!
If you are concerned about the alcohol content in the bourbon glaze you can substitute it with Apple Cider. Some will say a small amount of alcohol is perfectly safe, while others will disagree.
Another way to reduce the risk is to add bourbon to the butter while it’s still on the burner. Alcohol burns off at 172 degrees Fahrenheit, so therefore, many considered it safe for children if the bourbon has come to a boil. I’m not an expert on this matter and therefore suggest that you gather the facts and use your own judgment when serving this recipe to children or pregnant women.
