Ranch Water Cocktail What The Heck Is It?
First, I’m the first to say the name threw me too! I told my daughter I’d discovered a yummy new cocktail call Ranch Water and she turned her nose up.
However after explaining the ingredients, she decided that it might not be so bad.
Ranch Water cocktail is made from 3 easy ingredients.
- Tequila
- Lime Juice
- Sparkling Mineral Water (Topo Chico)
- Tajin or Salt (optional)
Why Do They Call It Ranch Water?
Well most everyone agrees that Ranch Water started in Texas and derived it’s name because it was the drink of choice for Ranchers in the 1960’s.
In more recent years the cocktail has spread to more urban areas and is a hot trend in most bars today.
Why Are Ranch Water Recipes a Hot Trend in Cocktails Now?
One sip and I was immediately a fan, however here are a few reason it’s gained in popularity.
- Easy to Make
- Refreshing without all the sugar
- Low Calorie
- Tastes great
- It’s like a Margarita Light
How To Make Ranch Water
First, let’s gather your supplies beginning with the tequila. I personally recommend Casamigos, however any good quality tequila works.
In addition, you need lime juice. This can be bottled or fresh squeezed. I have used both and fresh is best. However, the cost of fresh limes has encouraged me to mix a little of both and that works great.
Next, the sparkling mineral water most people choose is Topo Chico, hands down. I prefer it because it’s bottled and more sparkling than other brands.
Finally the best part, in my opinion, is the rim. I use Tajin and no straw for me because the Tajin adds so much to the cocktail. However, tastes differ and some like a salt rim or no rim at all.
Note: The seasoned rim is optional and when added, the sodium content as well as calories increase. If you are drinking this cocktail as a low calorie option, you may want to skip the rim.
How Do You Add A Season Rim To A Cocktail Glass?
Begin with a clean cocktail glass and a slice of citrus such as lime, lemon or orange.
Fold the citrus slice around the rim of the glass and circle the rim with the juice until it is wet.
Next, pour your tajin season into a small plate and press the rim of the glass into the seasoning.
Mixing the Ranch Water Cocktail
Fill your rimmed glass with ice and add 1-2 jiggers of Tequila. The amount of Tequila is a preference as well as the Tequila Brand.
Add approx. 1/2 jigger of lime juice and then fill with Topo Chico to the top of the glass.
Add a slice of lime to the rim and Cheers.

I first heard of ranch water on an HGTV show and have been hooked ever since! I can't wait to try it with a tajin rim, though. That sounds like a fun upgrade!

The rim makes it. However, lots of sodium.
