Why Make Your Own Tropical Napkin Rings?
I recently saw these adorable pompom napkin rings linked in a magazine. When I found the website and saw they were $48.00, I decided they could be made for much less.
Even if you don’t consider yourself a DIY person, you can make these cheap napkin rings, and here’s why you should.
- You will save so much money. I made ten for $5.00, but eight of the inspiration ones would have cost you $96.00. Yikes!
- They are easy to make. I promise anyone can do this craft.
- You can customize them for your table style. I’ll share some options in a minute.
Cheap Napkin Rings
First, you will need a base for your napkin rings.
I considered several options, including making a woven ring by braiding the raffia. However, I am always looking for old napkin rings while out thrifting.
I recently found a set of 10 wooden rings for only $4.00 and knew I’d eventually find a use for them.
They are a little distressed but work perfectly as a base for tropical napkin rings.
This method can also be used to wrap jute twine around binder rings for a base. Take a look at Creative Ideas for Napkin Rings Pottery Barn Style for the details.
In addition, I found these cheap options, and they will work just as well.
How To Make Tropical Napkin Rings Dupe For Cheap
In addition to the wooden napkin rings, you will need something to make the pom poms with.
I decided to recycle raffia from a Hawaiian grass skirt I had previously used for a table decoration. However, the raffia ribbon is inexpensive and works just as well. The grass skirt is only $1.25 at The Dollar Tree Store.
How To Make Tropical Pom Poms For Napkin Rings
To make the pom poms for the napkin rings, cut several lengths of the raffia.
I used two sections of the grass skirt for each pom pom.
In addition, I used jute twine to tie the raffia together.
Wrap Raffia
Begin by wrapping the raffia around a 2 1/2 piece of cardboard, or use your fingers.
Wrap until you come to the end of the raffia and hold it in position while removing it from your fingers or cardboard.
You can also use a pom pom maker. However, I find this method quicker and less work.
Tie To Make Pom Pom
Once you have the raffia secure, tie the center of the loop with the jute twine.
It’s important to tie the jute twine as tightly as possible to secure it.
Cut Ends and Fluff
Finally, cut the two edges of the loops and fluff the raffia by separating the pieces.
Cut away any excess jute twine from the pom pom.
How To Add Pom Poms To Cheap Napkin Rings
Once all the pom poms are made, you can add them to the cheap wooden napkin rings.
Add a generous amount of hot glue to the napkin ring and attach the pom pom to the ring where the jute twine was tied.
Hold the pom pom in place until it is secure.
Trim and Shape Pom Pom
After the glue is dry, begin to shape the pom poms by trimming the ends of the raffia.
Continue to fluff and trim until the tropical napkin rings are to your liking.

The tropical napkin ring dupe looks perfect with these fun napkins.
They are going to be perfect for an upcoming Tropical Cocktail Party.
Options for DIY Napkin Rings
Here are a few options for the DIY Napkin Rings that you may want to consider.
- Paint the wooden napkin rings before attaching the raffia pom poms.
- Use colored raffia for the pom poms
- Shape the pom poms into an oval leaf design.
- Wrap a binder ring with jute twine for the base.
- Use this technique to stiffen burlap and cute flower designs for festive napkin rings.
