Dollar Tree Supplies For Valentine Craft Project

When looking for inexpensive seasonal craft supplies, my first stop is always Dollar Tree. On my last visit, I picked up one of their wooden heart cutouts, a bag of small wood hearts, and a wall tile that looks like an old ceiling tin. Armed with these supplies, I only need a few more items to create the primitive Valentine craft project I had pictured in my mind.

Valentine Door Hanger Supplies

Here are the exact supplies I used to the the Valentine Door Hanger. Many items I already owned and were left over from previous projects.

How To Make Primitive Valentine Door Hanger

This is such an easy project. It only takes about an hour to complete if you speed up the drying time with a hair dryer. The Valentines door hanger cost me less than $5.00 to make because I had most of the materials onhand. Naturally, the cost increase the more you have to purchase. However, I recommend using what you have available. I’ll share some variations option at the end of the post for inspiration.

Step 1 – Trace Heart

The first step is to trace the wooden heart onto the backside of the wall tile. I used a sharpie marker since the material was plastic. Once you have the outline on the tile, use scissors to cut just inside the drawn lines.

Step 2 – Attach Wall Tile To Wooden Heart

Next, add hot glue to the outside edge of wooden heart and press the tile heart onto the board.

Step 3 – Add Wooden Beads To Primitive Heart

Now begin to add the half wooden beads around the edge of the tile side of heart. Apply a drop of hot glue to the inside edge of the outside rim and press the flat side of the bead into the glue. You can apply the beads close togerher or leave a small space between. I left a space because I only had a small supply of the beads available and didn’t want to run out.

Step 4 – Paint and Wax

The final step to finish your primitive Valentines craft project is to add paint and wax to the tile and beads. I used white chalk paint and painted two coats over the front side of the heart. To speed up drying time, I used a hair dryer to dry the paint.

Next, I added a combination of clear and dark wax over the top of the paint with a paper towel. I rubbed over the surface lightly to draw attention the raised areas of the tile.

Insider Tip

First, I don’t remember using a hair dryer to quickly dry paint unless the project is rustic. If the paint chips or cracks on this primitive craft, yay! But you don’t always want to risk that.

In addition, the reason I recommend using both clear and dark wax is this. Dark wax can grab to the raw paint and create an undesirable effect. I like to build up the dark wax slowly and using it mixed with the clear provides that freedom.

What To Do With The Dollar Tree Small Heart?

To be honest I wasn’t exactly sure how I would use the small wooden heart from Dollar Tree. At only $1.25 a pack, I brought them home for “just in case”!

The package had a combination of unfinished, red, and pink hearts. I painted the unfinished large heart white and used them to make a tassel for the primitive door hanger.

I added a small jute string with hot glue and covered it with a colored heart. Then on the other side, I added a different colored heart. This allows the tassel to turn without worry of an unfinished backside showing.

I tied three of the hearts onto the jute twine hanger. I also tied a bow with the heavier jute twine.

To give the Valentines Door Hanger a more rustic and primitive feel, I decided to create a bow from fabric strips.

Insider Tip – To Make A Rustic Bow

If you want your new fabrics to look rustic, tear the fabric instead of cutting it. Cut a 1/2 inch notch at the end of your fabric and then tear until you reach the end. The fabric will curl and give the appearance of old fabric. Use the fabric strips to create your primitive bow.

How To Decorate With Valentine Craft Project

In addition to looking charming on the pantry chalkboard door, this adorable primitive Valentine’s Day decor looks great all around the house.

I added it to the wall shelf in the living room and one of the windows in our staircase gallery wall. It also looks cute in the bedroom on a vintage shutter.

Where would you display this rustic heart? Although I had planned to display the heart on my pantry door, its primitive nature blends seamlessly with the architectural details and the antique etching above the shelf. I don’t guess it’s a bad thing if you can use a decor item in multiple ways. LOL

Alternative Valentine Craft Project Finishes

I had several ideas while I was planning the Valentine’s craft project. I basically used what I had on hand, and the project came together. However, many alternative ideas would be equally as appealing. Here are some of my ideas.

  • I considered painting the heart red or pink. Any color paint you have on hand would work.
  • You could use gold Rub N Buff products instead of wax. The gold would really pop on a red heart.
  • What could you use around the edge of the heart if you didn’t have the beads? I have several ideas.
    • Use small decorative, colorful beads
    • Add a rope around the edge of the heart.
    • Use small twigs approximately 1 inch long and overlap them around the edge. I would probably paint the twigs before applying them to the heart to save time.
    • Add foraged acorns or other gathered materials like tree bark for the edge.
    • Hot glue ribbon as a trim.
