Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably noticed the trend in mushroom decor. I’ll be honest and say that I’ve not been on board. The trend actually began in 2020 when during lockdown, crafters began creating unique deor from their homes. However, the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down. It hit it’s stride in 2023 with almost every retailer selling mushroom pillows, lamps, rugs, dishes and more.

As the trend has emerged and grown, we are seeing more options than the original brightly colored red mushrooms. We are seeing more rustic and subdued decor, more styles that work with different design aesthetics, such as cottage, farmhouse, and traditional home styles.

My interest was sparked when I saw these adorable mushroom dessert plates by Liz Marie’s Cozy Cottage line on QVC.

Once I had the new dishes, I knew I had to add more trending mushroom decor for fall. So follow along as I share how to make a DIY Mushroom Wreath with Dollar Tree Supplies for a budget-friendly craft.

Dollar Tree Mushroom Wreath Tutorial

When I decided to make a mushroom wreath, I originally thought I’d make some mushrooms out of air-dry clay. However, I found these adorable mushrooms when I went to the Dollar Tree for a wreath form and ribbon. So why would I make them when I can get three for $1.25?

I got everything I needed to make my fall mushroom decor for $7.50. I already had plenty of fall-colored craft paint from my Anthropologie-Inspired Cheese Markers.

Mushroom Wreath Supplies

Here are the supplies I used to create my mushroom decor.

  • 4 Packages of Dollar Tree Mushrooms
  • 1 – Small Styrofoam Wreath (8 inch) from Dollar Tree
  • Roll of Fall Plaid Ribbon from Dollar Tree
  • Craft Paint (I had on hand)
  • Rub n Buff Antique Gold (I had on hand)
  • Spanish Moss (you only need a small amount, and I also had this on hand)
  • Hot Glue Gun

How To Make DIY Mushroom Wreath

1. Paint The Dollar Tree Mushrooms

You can begin by painting the dollar tree mushrooms in the desired colors. I thought the stems looked perfect, but I painted the mushroom tops in three colors. I used moss green, sienna, and burnt sienna by folk art paint.

I recommend applying two coats of paint to the mushrooms to cover their original color completely. Allow the paint to dry.

2. Wrap Wreath Form

While the paint dries, wrap the wreath form with the fall plaid ribbon.

You can begin wrapping and overlapping the ribbon as you hold it tight. One roll of ribbon completely covered the 8″ wreath form. Add hot glue to the end of the ribbon to hold it in place.

3. Add Rub N Buff

To add a touch of shine to the mushroom decor, add a touch of antique gold rub n buff. Add a small amount of the antique gold to a paper towel and randomly touch it to the edges of the mushroom cap and stem.

4. Add Mushrooms and Spanish Moss To Wreath

Finally, begin to add your mushrooms and Spanish moss to the wreath with hot glue.

I started at the bottom of the wreath and worked outward in each direction. Begin with a small amount of moss and add a mushroom over the top. It is not necessary to add the Spanish moss under each mushroom. I wanted the ribbon to also be visible, so I placed the moss randomly for less coverage.

5. Make a Hanger for Mushroom Wreath

I had one mushroom left over when I reached the top of the mushroom wreath. I was happy with the design so I didn’t mind.

I used a piece of jute twine to tie a hanger onto the top of the wreath.

Fall Mushroom Decor

I can’t believe how cute this fall mushroom decor is. It makes me want to add more mushrooms this fall.

I decided to showcase the new mushroom wreath all around the kitchen. Here it is on the pantry door and on the doors to the hutch.

My original plan was to display it with the fall mushroom decor dishes in the dining room.

But it looks really good on the open shelves in the kitchen, too. Where do you think it looks best?

Other Mushroom Wreath Options

The unique, small mushroom wreath is perfect. However, I know that it’s smaller than you may desire. I decided to test it mixed with a grapevine wreath, which gives the wreath a whole new dimension. Just tie the original wreath at the top and bottom of a larger grapevine wreath for a more rustic style.

In Conclusion

Now that I’ve taken the plunge into the mushroom decor trend, what else could I add? LOL. I’m always hesitant to jump on the trendy decor train.

However, this craft was so quick and easy. I made the wreath in less than an hour, and it cost me $7.50 plus tax. As with any trend, I’m hesitant to spend a lot of money. My splurge was the Cozy Cottage Mushroom Dishes because I’m obsessed with dishes! But don’t be surprised if I pop up with another inexpensive mushroom idea before the trend dies! LOL!

I ordered some unpainted wooden mushrooms which I hope to paint with my granddaughter who has a fairy garden. Glad I ordered them when I did because they are sold out. I use mushrooms in my pots of plants outside and love them. Good new trend. Have fun with it.
