Easy DIY Hanging Flower Pots with Recycled Jars

Tired of throwing away those empty jars? Let’s make something fun and creative with them. Give them a new life as beautiful and functional DIY hanging flower pots! This easy project is eco-friendly and a great way to add a personal touch to your next dinner table.

I’ve been saving and collecting jars to recycle for this project. In addition, I recently found some vintage small milk jars at the thrift store. The combination is so fun and makes for an interesting over-the-table display.

DIY Hanging Flower Pots

I get so many questions about our DIY light fixture with hanging vases on our screen porch. This project uses a vintage tractor funnel and thrift store glass jars that I got for next to nothing. The jars are wrapped with galvanized wire, which is run through holes around the rim of the light fixture. The wire is then bent to hold the hanging flower pots in place.

I love changing out the flowers and other decor on a seasonal basis. But let’s talk about how to make hanging flower pots that you can hang over your table, from tree branches, or an over-the-table rod.

Material For Hanging Flower Pots

Here are the materials needed to create your own hanging flower pots.

  • A collection of recycled jars. I like a variety of sizes and shapes
  • 20-22 gauge galvanized wire
  • Wire Snips
  • Needle nose pliers

I used a few round horseradish jars, some square artichoke jars and the vintage milk bottles for my hanging flower pots.

How To Make Hanging Flower Pots

First, I like to make each pot hang at different heights. Therefore, the length of the wire you cut will be different for each hanging flower pot.

Begin by cutting two pieces of wire the same length with your wire snips. Ensure there is enough wire to wrap around the jar’s top and create a hanger. Wrap one piece around the jar top with a short end meeting a long end. Twist the first wire together to secure it. Use the needlenose pliers to tighten the wire around the jar. Then wrap the second piece of wire around the jar top and repeat at the opposite side of the jar.

Then, bring the two long ends of the wire up and twist them together to form a handle. When you twist the ends, bend them back over the twisted area so it will not slip.

Insider Tip

When you twist the wire for the hangers, you can leave it in a simple loop or add another loop by twisting the loop together at the top.

How To Hang Flower Pots

How you hang your flower pots will depend on where you plan to hang them. I used our DIY over-the-table rod and S hooks to decorate an outdoor table.

Decorative Over Table Stand

First, you need to put your table rod together. The table set up is pretty simple.

You want to attach the two end pieces securely to the table. We have two heavy-duty clamps holding each end in place. Once they are secured, you can run the center pole through the holes provided.

Add Garland and S Hooks

Next, you will want to wrap your rod with a seasonal garland or greenery. I recommend adding the S hooks as you place the garland so you can determine placement.

Next, fill your recycled jars with water and flowers. Hook the wire over the hooks and position so that the heights of the vases vary across the table.
