How To Transform A Thrifted Container Into A Coffee Table Accent?

I look for unique and interesting containers for flower arrangements and table accents when shopping in thrift stores. This is one of my favorite finds because there are so many ways to use this shaped vessel. The base is detachable, making it even more versatile. Let me show you my latest coffee table accent using this thrift store find.

How To Make Unique Centerpiece?

The glass container can be used with the base or without. I decided to remove the base and, in its place, wrap the glass with grapevine for an organic and rustic centerpiece. Here’s step-by-step how I put the paperwhite and moss centerpiece together.

Step 1 – Add Grapevine and Moss

I began by finding a grapevine wreath that fits around the glass container. I have several that I’ve made from foraged grapevine and, in the end, used two of my homemade wreaths to surround the vessel. Because the grapevine wreaths vary in size, one was just not substantial enough.

Then, I added moss to the bottom of the container and another smaller grapevine to help fill the space.

Step 2- Add Paperwhites To Accent Piece

Next, you can fill your container with paperwhites and other decor items you would like to use. I used a couple of faux paperwhites blooming bulbs. However, you can also use genuine bulbs and force them to bloom indoors. I’ll share more details for forcing real bloom next.

First, if you use faux stems, placing them in the moss to secure them is easy. Place the paperwhites where you want them and pack moss around the bulb base.

Next, add other items you wish to display. I added a small bluebird and nest, along with a few small pinecones, as well as guinea feathers.

Insider Tip – How To Add Real Paperwhite Bulbs

This coffee table accent would be stunning with real paperwhite bulb that are being forced to bloom indoors. Here’s how to fill your container.

  • Layer the bottom of your container with small gravel
  • Add a layer of potting soil over the gravel.
  • Place bulbs with open end facing up and roots down.
  • Add a small amount of water to the container.
  • Surround the bulbs with moss and add other decorative items.
  • As the water evaporates, you can tilt the container and add a small amount of water to draw the roots downward. Be cautious to not over fill the container. Add just enough to cover the gravel.

Step 3 – Final Touches

As a final touch, you can add more moss if needed. I also added a few pieces of Spanish moss to the grapevine surrounding the container. In addition, ensure that all your arrangement items are in your desired position. Ta-da, see how easy that was!

How To Style WithvYour Coffee Table Accent

Now, it’s time to add the centerpiece to the coffee table.

This coffee table accent is quite large, but I have an even larger coffee table. Therefore, I needed to add a few additional items to create a centerpiece vignette. If you have a smaller table, the paperwhite and moss centerpiece will be sufficient alone.

In addition to the thrifted container and grapevine, I added a stack of books with a couple of small birds perched on their covers.

Although the centerpiece hints of Spring, the trio of snow-tipped pinecones reminds us that it’s still winter. Along with these natural items, a few vintage brass candlesticks and battery-operated candles complete the vignette.

This stunning coffee table centerpiece can be updated as we move into Spring and Summer with other fun decor choices. However, the bluebird looks like she’s here for the duration.

Where Else Can I Use The Centerpiece to Decorate

This accent piece would be stunning on almost any table. Use it for a dining table centerpiece or entry table accent arrangement. It’s an excellent size for a side table stand-alone piece or grouped with other items on a console table or etagere.

Regardless of where you need an accent piece, this easy-to-make centerpiece fits any decor style. Let me know what you think and what you would have done differently.

  1. Very cute. You may want to clarify that the nests are not real. Please remind people that collecting bird nests is illegal (even nests found on the ground).
