What Type of Napkin Ring Should You Look For?
So, what should you look for when thrifting for napkin rings? Plain wood, plastic, or ceramic will work best; the good news is they are usually cheap. I found these four rings for only $1.00. They are sturdy and easy to work with.
How Do You Prepare For Napkin Decoupage?
Next, you will want to prepare the thrifted napkin rings for the napkin decoupage application. Unless the rings are white, you will want to paint them. If you are working with plastic or ceramic, I recommend adding a coat of chalk paint regardless.
Paint the entire ring inside and out with two coats of chalk paint. This will ensure that the wood color will not bleed through once the napkin is applied.
How To Work With Napkins
Once the rings are dry, it’s time to apply the napkin. You will need to separate the napkin so that you are working with the top printed layer only.
Next, cut the design that you want to feature from the napkins. I’m working on a Chinoiserie Blue and White tablescape, so I’m using the oriental edge of the napkin. Cut the pieces to fit around the ring.
Apply Mod Podge over the entire outside of the napkin ring and apply the blue and white napkin to it. Use your brush filled with more Mod Podge to smooth any bubbles and settle the napkin smoothly over the ring.
Allow the napkin to dry. I suggest placing it on a knife or skewer to hold it away from any solid surface while drying.
Insider Tip
Although you can add the napkin decoupage to the inside of the ring, I don’t find it necessary. Instead, paint the inside with your paint color or a contrasting color. Then, apply a coat of Mod Podge over the paint to seal it.
Blue and White Napkin Rings
Didn’t they turn out great? Can you believe they cost less than $1.00 each?
These four DIY Blue and White Napkin Rings only took minutes to complete, and only two napkins were used for the project.
