What Is A Screened-In Porch
I have dreamed of a screen-in porch for years, and finally, having one has not disappointed me.
A screen porch allows you to have a peaceful outdoor retreat, shielded from the elements. The screened walls offer a view of the surrounding landscape and will allow the breeze to blow through, without worry of pesky bugs. The porch is covered, so you are protected from the elements while still enjoying the outdoors.
Cozy Fall Decor For Porches
The screened-in porch is a favorite spot for morning coffee and evening relaxation. It’s essential to keep the decor cozy year-round. Here are some of my cozy ideas for fall decor for porches.
A Porch With A View
The view from our porch is the best part. We can sit here and see a view of all three ponds. As the sun sinks behind the mountain, we can watch fish jumping and hear crickets and bullfrogs begin their nightly routine. As the season progresses, the mountain will turn into an amazing red, gold, and orange landscape. I’m already seeing a few changes underway.
Rudy loves to be on the screen porch. The second he hears the door open, he rushes out. I’ve accidentally locked him out because he’s very stealth, and sometimes I don’t know he slipped by me.
Warm Golden Fall Porch Decor
As we move into fall, evenings can become chilly, and I like to fill the cozy sofa and side chairs with warm blankets and throw pillows.
This year, I added warm golden touches to the screened-in porch. A chunky throw blanket and fall-inspired pillows, including a favorite DIY decorative scrap fabric pillow add texture for cozy seating. The side chair is filled with a rustic needlepoint pheasant pillow and another gold and cream blanket.
The coffee table continues the warm golden theme with fabric pumpkins nestled under glass cloches and dried pods. It’s a great spot to share a snack and provides a safe place to sit our beverages.
A foraged grapevine garland wrapped with twinkle lights surrounds the screen porch ceiling to provide ambient lighting. Once the sun goes down, the subtle lighting is just the ticket.
Rustic Dining Area for Farmhouse Retreat
The dining area had many rustic farmhouse retreat elements. The DIY light fixture offers subdued lighting over the table, and the hanging vases are filled with rustic foraged elements.
Warm autumn colors abound in the dining area. Rustic dried gourds, pumpkins, and vintage thrift store finds create a casual dining experience. To make a unique table centerpiece, I filled a vintage toolbox with fall dishes and glassware.
The centerpiece provides handy tableware storage for my wheat dishes and glasses collection. Having them on the table allows for a quick table setup. Whether it’s a quick snack or a full meal, the table is ready at a moment’s notice.
The centerpiece vignette includes napkins and silverware, along with more fall porch decor like vintage brass candlestick holders, dried gourds, and DIY Old Book Page Pumpkins.
The vintage icebox and side table, with more dishes, fall pumpkins, and dried arrangements, add a rustic, cozy feel. The woven baskets help add texture and visual interest to the screened-in porch dining area.
More Autumn Touches: Baker’s Rack
Next to the interior door is a baker’s rack filled with more warm autumn touches. It does double duty when we entertain on the screened-in porch. It makes a great beverage or dessert station.
A gold and rust leaf garland is placed at the top to add warmth, and a bundle of dried wheat serves as a floral focal point. A thrifted framed needlepoint verse and the DIY wood scrap village help to add an inviting cottagecore feel to the space.
Maintenance Tips For Fall Screen Porch Retreat
Although I love my screened porch, some maintenance is involved, as with any fall decor for porches. The porch is covered, but wind and rain can still wreak havoc on your screened-in porch. Here are few tips I recommend for porch maintenance.
- Decorate with outdoor all-weather furniture, cushions, fall pillows, and rug fabrics.
- If you use indoor fall pillows, throw blankets, etc., spray them with Scotchgard, a water-repellant safe for all fabrics. Be cautious and test before saturating your expensive fabrics.
- Don’t place delicate vases or other lightweight decor in places where the wind can break them.
- Pull sofas, chairs, etc., into the middle of the room if you know a storm is coming. Or better yet, remove cushions, blankets, etc., to a safe dry spot before high winds and rain.
- Sun is another concern if the temperatures are high. We added roll-up shades to keep the evening sun at bay, and we love the addition.
- Finally, to allow a longer season on the screen porch, we add vinyl drapes over the outside of screens in December. They stay on until pollen season is over. They were definitely worth the investment.
We also added a closet to our porch to store cushions and pillows when not in use. It has been a lifesaver for keeping our fabrics clean and mildew-free.
In Conclusion
Look for cozy, textured textiles in warm fall colors to create a cozy farmhouse retreat. Arrange comfortable seating with a view of your landscape. Throw in rustic seasonal decor such as pumpkins, seasonal art, dried pods, gourds, and flowers. If you have a dining space, use your fall dishes and tableware to create a warm farmhouse-style haven on your sceened-in porch. But most importantly, take time to enjoy this autumn season, get outdoors, and appreciate the glory of the changes this season brings!
