Thrifting with the Gals

Today’s post is part of our monthly series, Thrifting with the Gals. If you are new to our series, we are friends who share a love for vintage and thrifted decorating. We all live in different parts of the country, but we come together once a month to share thrift store shopping ideas and tips on decorating with your treasures.

Here are the Gals:

  • Ann from Dabbling and Decorating finds her treasures as she travels between Vermont and Maine. She decorates both homes with so many vintage treasures.
  • Robyn from Robyn’s French Nest loves to travel and bring her vintage treasure to her lovely Florida Home.
  • Lora from Lora Bloomquist Create and Ponder is thrifting and picking up amazing roadside finds to decorate her home in Minnesota.
  • I am from North Carolina and love filling my farmhouse and beach cottage with thrift store finds. I focus on budget-friendly decorating and DIY projects.
  • This month our thrifting guest is Brook at The Junk Parlor. We are so excited to have her visiting with us again this year!

Best Tips For Beginner’s Shopping Guide

If you are beginning to thrift for Easter decorations, here are a few tips for success.

  • Start early. Most thrift stores begin pulling out the seasonal decor two to three months before hand. By the time Easter rolls around, the shelves will be bare.
  • Be patient! You will not find everything at once. I’ve collected for several years and still haven’t found all the pieces on my wish list.
  • Be creative. Don’t look for perfection! Ask yourself, “Can this item be repurposed or painted to match my decor?”
  • Think beyond Easter decorations! By this, I mean, maybe it’s a bowl, vase, lamp base, lamp shade, or plate that you can update with decoupage napkins, fabrics, or hand paint to create a holiday-themed design. I’ve seen some adorable Easter napkins and fabrics that would be perfect for making adorable lampshades or covering a lamp base.

Best Deals on Easter Decor To Thrift For

First, I want to say that what items you thrift for will be a personal preference. However, here are some of the best deals I’ve found when thrifting for Easter decor.

  • Easter Baskets – I’ve seen so many adorable baskets this season and they are priced from $.99 – $4.99. Great prices.
  • Easter Figurines – Bunnies, sheep, baby chicks, eggs, etc. The list of cute figurines for Easter is endless and the prices are usually reasonable.
  • Decorative Plates, painting, and art prints.
  • Wreaths – I’ve seen some great wreaths for $4.00 and up. If the wreath isn’t in the best of condition, consider removing damaged materials and replacing with fresh.
  • Easter Eggs – I rarely go into a thrift store this time of year with seeing plastic eggs. If you need some, go check it out.
  • Craft Supplies – the plastic eggs can be great for crafting. Look for wreath bases, basket fillers, and paint supplies to update your finds.
  • Vintage, primitive, and cottage core Easter – Look for handcrafted and vintage pieces.
  • Easter tableware – Dishes, napkins, table runners, table clothes, napkin rings, salt & pepper shakers, bowls, and other serving pieces are so inexpensive. Add a touch of Easter to your table settings for cheap.

Look For Vintage Easter Decor

When I’m shopping thrift store, I’m always on the look out for vintage and antique finds. They will usually be less expensive at a thrift store than at an antique mall or shop.

These cute bunnies are both vintage and the prices were a little more than I wanted to pay. The one with the blue apron is actually a bank and I’m regretting leaving it at the store.

I’ve been collecting vintage lambs or sheep for a few years and the collection is slowly growing. I paid less than $5.00 for most of these lambs.

Cottage Core, Handcrafted and Primitive

I also love to find handcrafted and primitive pieces at thrift stores. Here are a few I found recently.

The sweet primitve bunny is adorable with her Spring pocket. And this handcrafted sheep pull toy caught my eye as I was leaving the store. What a steal for $15.00.

These handcrafted fabric bunnies were made recently but still so sweet. The arts and crafts wood bunny immediate captured my attention due to his unique attention to detail.

Collecting Easter Tableware

Y’all know that I love setting a beautiful tablescape and finding unique pieces for Easter is always a win, win! My favorite pieces are the bunny napkin rings and salt and pepper shakers. The bunny serving piece works for the table or anywhere around the house.

If I’m honest, i rarely leave a bunny behind. I have this favorite bunny planter statuary, and other concrete bunnies that I use year round at the farmhouse.

DIY Easter Decor Transformations

One of my favorite things to look for is items that are cheap but can be tranformed into stunning Easter decor with a little creativity. So what should you look for?

First, something that says Easter but not your style. Can you make it work?

Last year I found these cute figurines at a thrift store. Neither worked with my decor style but with a quick napkin decoupage technique, they look adorable. You can see the full tutorial at DIY Easter Lamb Makeover.

How To Decorate With Thrift Store Easter Decorations

Whether you want to decorate your porch, living room, or dining table with Easter decorations, using thrift store finds will save you money. Let’s take a look a ways to use your treasures to decorate your home.

Thrifted Easter Tablescapes

This is a favorite Easter tablescape because the entire table is thrifted and includes lots of lambs. The vintage dishes and silverware were both Habitat for Humanity finds that were a steal. The placemat, napkins and water goblets were also second-hand finds. And my lamb collection takes centerstage. One of my original paintings Mother’s love adds to the theme. The same napkin rings and salt and pepper shakers work well with this Black and White Easter Tablescape theme.

Thrifted Porch Decor

Although I use my concrete bunnie planter to hold flowers and greenery, this year I filled her with Easter eggs and carrots. You can see more details at this years Easter porch tour.

The screened porch is another place I love to decorate for Easter and the shiplap tree looks adorable filled with bunnies.

Did you guess that I went back to get this adorable lamb? The sweet primitive lamb pull toy found a spot on the porch coffee table vignette, adding a whimsical charm to our seating area.

Farmhouse Easter Decorating

I love to add a few touches of Easter throughout the farmhouse during the Spring. Take a look a few of the vignettes I’ve used over the years.

    1. MaryJo,
Thank you for stopping by. I’m so glad you like the sheep. I’ve been collecting for a few years so don’t give up. Have the best day.

  2. I’ve been slowly collecting sheep to use as Easter the last couple of years, too. You reminded me I should hit the antique stores and scoop them up soon. I spied some cabbage ware in your Easter decor;) Great thrifting tips-yes, you need to shop holidays early!

  3. Hi Rachel,

I love your sheep! I have a small collection, too, but they are are hard to find! I think they are the perfect decoration for Easter, since Jesus was the Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins of the world. Thanks for sharing!

    Blessings,

I agree much harder to find than bunnies. I lucked up last year and someone had donated several at one time. Hope you have some luck finding more this year.
