Dollar Tree Valentine’s Day Decor Ideas

One of my favorite places to find supplies for seasonal decor is Dollar Tree, and right now, they are packed with Valentine’s Day Decor. I knew I wanted to make moss heart topiaries for our mantel this year but wasn’t exactly sure what supplies I’d find. But after a few minutes of scanning the Valentine’s decor aisle, I found exactly what I needed. So here are the supplies I saw and everything I used to create these adorable moss heart topiaries.

Step One – Gather Containers

The first step is determining what type of container you want for your topiaries. I decided to use two blue and white containers that I have in my stash. One is a clay pot I napkin decoupaged last year, and the other is one of three flower pots I purchased on Amazon.

Step Two – Add Stem To Heart

Once you have your containers, measure how long you need to cut the stem or dowel rod. I used a very simple approach of holding the heart above the container to determine how high I wanted it and then placed the stem in the container to measure. I used a pencil to mark where to cut the stem, allowing enough extra length for the stem to be attached to the heart. I used pruning snips to cut the rod to size.

To attach, I added hot glue to the backside of the Dollar Tree heart and held the stem until the glue dried. Ensure that your stem is straight in alignment with the heart. I then added gold Rub n Buff to add a little shine to the dowel rod. You can paint your stem, leave it natural, or use a foraged twig.

Step 3 – Add Moss To Dollar Tree Heart

You can now add the reindeer moss to the Dollar Tree Valentine’s heart. I began on the backside of the heart. You should protect your workspace with some wax paper to avoid damage from the hot glue. Start working in small sections by adding hot glue to the overall surface of the heart and press the moss into the glue. I recommend using finger protection to avoid any burns.

Once the backside is covered, turn the heart over and repeat on the front side.

Step 4 – Add Heart Topiaries To Containers

Attach a styrofoam block to the bottom with hot glue to secure the heart topiaries in the containers. I used several recycled plastic bags to fill around the styrofoam. The plastic bags will help keep the styrofoam secure and help to fill the pot so you don’t waste moss.

Hold the moss heart as straight as possible and push the stem into the styrofoam.

Step 5 – Add Moss and Bow (optional)

Finally, add more moss to cover the styrofoam and fill the container. I added a thin red bow to one of my toparies, which is optional. You can add bows or other embellishments to give your moss heart topiaries your own creative touch.

How To Decorate With Dollar Tree Valentine’s Decor

I had planned to use my moss heart topiaries on my mantel as Valentine’s Day Decor. However, now I’m not sure where I like them best. The good news is that I love them in all the locations. Let’s take a look at some options.

Valentine’s Day Mantel

First, my original plan was to use this Dollar Tree Valentine’s Decor on the mantel along with the DIY paper heart garland made with old book pages.

I tried them grouped together and then one at each end. I intended for one to be slightly shorter than the other. However, I didn’t measure correctly, so I used a book to raise one of the toparies when I grouped them.

Insider Tip – Use Risers

I am a strong advocate of using risers in my vignettes. Varying your display decor’s heights will help create an eye-appealing vignette. I use many items for risers, from books, wood rounds, boxes, breadboards, cheeseboards, and more.

Heart Topiaries In The Kitchen

Next, I moved the heart topiaries to the kitchen, first as a centerpiece on the kitchen island. I used a French cheese board as a riser and added two napkin decoupage candlestick holders to the vignette. Then, I tried them on the open shelves with a mix of vintage brass, copper, and silver metals.

Valentine’s Day Table Centerpiece

Finally, I used one as a Valentine’s Day table centerpiece, while the other topiary worked nicely on a vintage pedestal. The table arrangement includes a flower pot filled with DIY paper hearts, vintage brass candlestick holders, more blue and white ceramics, and the DIY Coffee Filter floral garland.

Which was your favorite spot for the Valentine’s Day decor? Since the Dollar Tree Valentine’s decor is so inexpensive and easy to make, I’m tempted to make more. How many heart topiaries are too many? LOL

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Which glue is best for making moss topiaries? Answer: Here are the pros and cons.
    • Hot Glue – Pro – Fast application and drying time. Con – It takes a lot of glue, and you must be cautious about getting your fingers burned when adding the moss.
    • Craft Glue – Pro – Inexpensive and no risk of getting burned. Con – Dries slowly and can be messy until the glue is dry.
  2. Does the pink glitter show after the moss is applied? Answer: If you apply the moss correctly, the pink will not show. Be sure to apply the moss over all areas. However, I do get a peak of glitter if the light hits the topiary just right. I don’t think that’s a negative. The slight shimmer is an added bonus.
  3. What size is the Dollar Tree Pink Heart? Answer: The heart is 9 inches tall x 9 inches wide. It’s a great size for this project.
  4. What are other frame options for making a heart topiary? Answer: Dollar Tree has a metal heart wreath frame, which is larger but can be cut down. I used that option for last year’s 5 Easy Valentine’s Wreaths. The disadvantage of this wreath frame is you will need to cover the frame with fabric or floral tape for the moss to adhere to. Here are some other options for the frame.
  5. The heart is flat on one side. Does it look bad from the backside? Answer: To be honest, I initially thought I’d attach two hearts to create an identical front and back look. However, I didn’t do it since I plan to use them on my mantel. However, after applying the moss, they look okay from the back. They looked fine from the back when I placed them on my kitchen island.
