How To Make DIY Pumpkins With Wool Dryer Balls
These adorable wool pumpkins will give your home a rustic, cozy fall feel. You can decorate them in many ways. First, let’s look at what you need to get started.
Supplies
Here are the supplies I used. Click on the highlighted items for shopping details.
- Wool Dryer Balls
- Spanish Moss
- Jute Twine
- Small sticks, twigs, or cinnamon sticks
- Acorns or other adornment
- Hot Glue Gun
- Finger Protectors
How To Assemble The DIY Pumpkin Craft
To create a DIY pumpkin craft with the wood dryer balls, tie the jute twine around the ball twice. Pull the twine as tight as possible to create pumpkin-like sections, and secure the twine with a knot.
Next, add hot glue at the top of the knot and attach a stick or cinnamon stick for the pumpkin stem. After the stick is secure, add more hot glue around the stick and press the Spanish moss around it.
Insider Tip
I recommend using finger protectors when working with hot glue. The Spanish moss must be pressed onto the wool ball, and it’s easy to burn your fingers.
In addition, if you prefer colorful pumpkins, you can paint the wool dryer balls with craft paints before beginning the project. You can use orange, blue, or green paints to create pumpkin crafts for your decor style. You can also use beads, pearls, leaves, or any number of items to enhance your creations.
Finally, add acorns or other enhancements to the Spanish moss using the hot glue gun. You can also tie a bow with jute twine or a decorative ribbon. I added a bow to some of my pumpkins and left others plain.
Insider Tip
When working with foraged materials such as acorns, you need to take precautions to avoid unwanted bugs in your home. These acorns had been frozen for several days before I began the project. This Foraging Safety Guide provides other methods and safety precautions.
How Can You Decorate With This Pumpkin Craft?
Don’t you love how they turned out? I wanted to make this rustic pumpkin craft to fill a small dough bowl for my porch table. However, you can use them in many ways to decorate your home for fall.
The Best Way To Fill A Bowl With DIY Pumpkins
To decorate your pumpkins in a bowl, fill the bottom with Spanish moss, shredded basket filler, or other filler that works with your decor. Then, arrange your pumpkins in the bowl. You can add smaller items to help fill the bowl. Since I used foraged acorns to adorn my pumpkins, I added a few larger ones to the bowl.
Other Decorating Ideas
When decorating for fall, I like to add pumpkins all around the farmhouse. You will see them tucked on the mantel, shelves, tables, and cabinet tops. They look stylish alone or in small groupings.
Tuck them in with architectural elements and other fall vignettes for an interesting display.
Another fun idea is to display your pumpkin craft on candlestick holders. They would look great on a mantel or with a table centerpiece like the one below.
They look adorable as place card holders on a fall table, and wouldn’t your guests love to take one home after the party?
