What is a Charcuterie Board – How do you pronounce it?

Unless you are living under a rock, you have heard of Charcuterie Boards! They are so popular right now, but what are they?

Charcuterie is a French term – The art of assembling cured meats and meat products.

The current definition is: The assembly of cured meats, cheeses, bread/crackers, olives, fruits & nuts.

It seems everyone has their own idea about how to pronounce Charcuterie, so here’s how it’s pronounced – “shahr-ku-tuh-ree”. There, I hope that helps. LOL

Making a Creative Charcuterie Board

Have you seen those cute roses made from salami? I just had to give it a try and guess what! They are super easy to make.

All you need is a wine glass or any glass with a small opening. Just wrap your hard salami around the rim and flip it over. Ta Da!

I began my board with a couple of these cuties and then filled in with cheese next.

You can add as many different types of meats and cheese as you prefer. I used two meats, the salami which I made the roses from and I rolled some prosciutto slices.

Next, I added three types of hard cheese.

To fill in the middle I used grapes and strawberries. You can use blueberries, peaches, kiwi, etc.

You have so many options for additional items on your Charcuterie Board. I chose to add olives and sweet pickles, as well as mixed nuts. In addition, I used pita chips instead of bread.

Other creative Ideas

When planning for your charcuterie board, you want to add colorful fruits and cheeses to make the board interesting. In addition, you can make it user friendly by adding a label to each cheese. This assures your guest that they are choosing a cheese to their liking.

This Charcuterie Board is so handy because you have a convenient tray with your cutlery and chalk board signs for your cheese display. It also includes the chalk for labeling.

Other considerations

When planning your charcuterie board ingredients, consider your party or gathering location.

Because I was planning for an outdoor event, I choose cured meats and hard cheese. Both of these, as well as the other items, can withstand a little heat without spoiling.

However, always use caution when entertaining outdoors. Don’t leave any perishable items in direct sunlight or exposed to the heat for an extended period of time.

I placed the tray outside just before serving and removed after approx. 45 minutes. The tray was completely empty anyway! LOL

In addition, I used pita chip crackers instead of bread. I knew bread would become stale quickly in a humid, outdoor environment.

You can also add small serving bowls to your board for items that come packaged in liquid or soft cheese spreads. I used two small pewter bowls for the olives and pickles.
