What Is A Cozy Hygge Aesthetic?
You may be asking what is hygge. Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish word that has taken the world by storm. It’s more than just a design aesthetic; it’s a way of life revolving around simple living and creating cozy spaces.
Ideas for January Decorating: Bring Nature Inside
A favorite idea for January decorating is with foraged items from nature.
Winter offers an abundance of evergreens and pinecones. Sticks or twigs are also easily found.
The foraged pinecones, with a little fake flocking or snow, are perfect for filling containers. Combined with the battery-operated flicker candles, they create a stunning vignette for a coffee table centerpiece. The candles are safe and easy to turn on with a remote.
You can also see how to easily add fake snow to pinecones, trees, or branches.
These gathered from natural elements look lovely in porch planters as well. A basket filled with snowy pinecones rests on a vintage sled for a winter porch vignette. The snowy grapevine wreath needed more volume so a twig wreath was added with twist ties. You can see more of the winter porch details here.
Boxwood is a favorite evergreen for winter decorating! Winter is the perfect time to cut this long-lasting plant to fill your containers. Boxwood cut in winter months will last into the summer.
Ideas for January Decorating: Bring The Outdoor Inside
I like to bring stems and bulbs inside early each year to force some blooms. You can read more about bringing elements of nature inside on How To Force Blooms For Winter Flowers. Paperwhite Bulbs are a favorite to add a cozy winter feeling to your home.
Winter Decoration Ideas: Keep A Few Holiday Items
There is no need to put away every Christmas item because some pieces work perfectly as decorations for Winter. As an example, a few snowmen continue to hang around for the winter months. In addition, I leave my snowy trees and wreath along with my vintage sled.
January decor ideas include a few snowy trees and wreaths to keep the farmhouse warm and cozy.
You can also add paper snowflakes during the Winter. See how to make them here.
Cozy Up With Blanket Throws & Pillows
One of the best ideas for Winter decorations is to use lots of throw blankets & pillows. They not only make the room look cozy but also are practical for this time of year. I rarely watch TV without pulling a blanket over my legs. Be sure to have plenty within reach at all times.
Winter Decorating Ideas For Cozy Tablescapes
Woods and whites have long been a favorite way to cozy up a room and add texture. They are a perfect choice for winter decorating ideas. Layering lots of breadboards, old rolling pins, or wooden trays is an inexpensive way to add warmth to your home this Winter.
Bring out the vintage ironstone to add to the wood and white decor style for a cozy winter table. Add some candlelight for more winter decoration ideas.
Sophie and her snowy background continue to grace my table for several weeks during Winter.
A snowy pinecone takes centerstage on the Winter Table, and you can see the Sophie Print here.
Adding white dishes to a natural wood riser creates a warm centerpiece for this Winter Table.
The vintage brass bird salt and pepper shakers are one of my favorite family heirlooms. It’s so fun to combine them with vintage brass candlesticks and force blooms.

Warm Metals are a Great Winter Decoration Idea
Add touches of copper and vintage brass throughout your home to add warmth to your winter spaces. I love collecting both copper and brass when out thrifting.
Layer Collections
Another cozy idea is to layer your thrift and vintage collections. The copper pots hung together on the DIY Copper Hanger create an instant warm feeling in the farmhouse kitchen,
See how to make new wood look like old barn wood on the post showing how the island top was aged.
Adding Textured Decor
A wooden barrel, tray, or toolbox looks great when filled with an old book collection. Add a hurricane lantern filled with a candle and wrap it in greenery to create a warm vignette.
Baskets are another great idea for winter decorating. They add texture and are great for storage as well.
Let There Be Light
Flicker candles help to create a hygge sense of well-being, and they are safe to use when mixing with natural elements. You can see more January home decorating ideas and creating a cozy winter mantel here.
You can also make areas feel more cozy by adding mirrors to the dark corners of your home. You can see more details about adding mirrors on How to Style Shelves.
Decorations for Winter: Screen Porch Decor
Let’s talk about decorations for the Winter Porch Decor.
Even the screened porch gets a January update with stacks and stacks of white dishes on shelves to add a cozy feel.
More foraged pinecones and a few faux red birds keep the porch festive during Winter.

Hi Rachel, you have a Beautiful Home. I always have a wreath on my Front Door, and I always struggle after I take my Christmas wreath down to find a wreath option. I don't want to put a Fall wreath back up for January, and it's too early for a Valentine or Spring wreath, Any Ideas? Have a Great Day, Ellen

Ellen, I used either a natural wreath with twigs or grapevine. You could also add some faux snow or add a small snowman to a winter wreath. I usually add Valentines by mid-January.
