Let’s face it, Dollar Tree Christmas trees aren’t exactly known for their beauty. But with a little DIY magic, you can turn that gaudy $1.25 tree into a holiday showstopper. Today’s Dollar Tree tutorial will teach you how to transform your Dollar Tree dud into a gorgeous, charming twig Christmas tree.
I love the three-tiered shape of this little Christmas tree but that where the attraction ended. It was a little gaudy and didn’t work with my holiday decor. However, I love coming up with unique Dollar Tree ideas that transform the ordinary into extraordinary home decor. So let me show you what I did.

From Gaudy To Designer Fabulous
I love to shop around for Dollar Tree Ideas each season, and when I saw this small tree, I knew it could be something amazing. I’ll share step-by-step how I transformed it from gaudy to designer fabulous.
Step One – Undress The Tree
First, I removed all the gaudy decorations from the tree frame. She already looks better! LOL! I decided that I wanted the twig Christmas tree to be white, so I used Chalky White Spray paint to hide the green frame.
Step Two – Gather Your Supplies
Next, I went into my yard and picked up several twigs. Look for smaller branches with straight pieces. Then, determine the longest lengths you need by measuring the Dollar Tree frame. Cut several long pieces and then cut several more shorter pieces. You will also want a variety of thicknesses, from approximately the size of a No. 2 pencil to much smaller. The amount you see below was not enough, and I had to gather more.
Step Three – Assemble Twig Christmas Tree
To assemble the twigs on the Christmas Tree frame, begin at the bottom. Apply hot glue to the twig where it will attach to the frame and start attaching. Be sure that the twig is aligned straight. I recommend placing all the longer twigs first and then filling in between them with smaller ones.
Continue to work up the tree until the three-tiered frame is completely covered.
Once the twig placement is complete, add a topper to the tree. I had set aside the original star that came with the tree but decided it was to small for the twig tree. Therefore, I gathered a small pinecone and attached it to the top with hot glue.
Step Four – Paint A Twig Christmas Tree and Add Glitter
Next, I took the tree outside and used Chalky White to spray paint the entire twig Christmas Tree. Once that paint was dry, I added a tiny bit of gold paint to some Elmer’s glue and lightly brushed it over the twigs and pinecone.
Finally, I sprinkled the glue mixture with iridescent glitter to give the tree a bit of shimmer.
Step Five – Add New Tree Base
I was also unhappy with the tree base, so I searched craft supplies for an alternative. I found this old wooden spool left over from the Vintage Spool Tassels and decided it would be perfect. I found a stick that would fit into the spool and added a couple of wooden washers to the top. You will want to add glue to the washers to hold them in place.
Next, I removed the original base from the tree with pruning shears. Regular scissors would have probably worked just as well.
I then added glue to the stick and placed the twig Christmas tree on top. Ensure the tree is standing straight on the spool and allow it to dry before moving.
How To Decorate With Twig Christmas Tree
Don’t you love how elegant she looks? You would never guess that it’s an inexpensive Dollar Tree idea! For $1.25 and a little creativity you can create amazing decor for your home.
I placed her next to my DIY Birch Bark Angel, but she will mix well with many of my holiday decorations.
Mix With Other Christmas Trees
I love using her with the frosted trees on architectural salvage bases. But the updated bottle brush trees look equally good.
What about alone with a mirror to reflect her beauty? Regardless, the ugly duckling is now an elegant swan. LOL
