DIY Realistic Faux Corn Husk Wreath with Parchment Paper

Do you love decorating with corn stalks and husks for fall? I always add a DIY corn husk wreath each year. But what if there aren’t any corn husks? Let me show you how you can create a faux corn husk wreath that looks so realistic your friends will never know the difference.

Friends, when I went to gather my corn husks, I was in for a rude awakening. The recent storms had ruined them. They were brittle and had mold spots. In fact, the whole cornfield looked like a scene from The Walking Dead. Since I wasn’t looking for a spooky wreath, I decided to try making faux corn stalks and husk for this year’s fall decorations.

How To Make A DIY Faux Corn Husk Wreath?

Since I could not find good corn husks this year, I began to look for an alternative. It needed to be similar in color to real ones and easy to work with. I decided to use unbleached parchment paper. The paper has a silky feel just like real corn husks, and the unbleached version is perfect in color. In addition, it’s easy to crinkle without tearing it.

Supplies

Here is a list of the supplies I used to create the faux corn husk leaves.

How To Make A Faux Corn Stalk Leaf With Parchment Paper

I made two sizes of husks. The longer ones are like corn stalk leaves, and the smaller ones are more like corn husks. First, let’s talk about the faux corn stalk leaves. I began by folding the 12-inch parchment paper several times, approximately 5 inches wide. You want several folds so you can cut multiple leaves at one time. I didn’t use a template for the faux corn stalk leaves, as no two are normally the same.

After you cut several leaves, fold them in half and then wrinkle them by twisting the paper.

Once I had several cut to size, I began to bundle them in sets of three. Fan the three leaves out and twist them together at the bottom. Wrap with brown floral tape to secure.

How To Make The Faux Corn Husk

Next, repeat the first step from above to make the faux corn husk. These are approximately 6 inches tall, so fold your parchment paper several times at 6 inches. Then, cutting from the fold, you can get three corn husks in one fold. You don’t need to bundle these smaller corn husks because they will be applied individually.

How To Prepare Wire Wreath Frame

I used a wire wreath frame for this DIY corn husk wreath. However, if you prefer, you can use a grapevine wreath. The wire wreath requires a little prep work before adding the faux corn stalk leaves and husks.

I used some natural colored raffia ribbon that I had on hand to wrap around the wreath frame. You want some that will leave gaps for you to add the faux corn husks. For this method, I tied the ribbon to the frame in sections and wrapped until it was covered.

Assemble Corn Husk Wreath

Now you are ready to assemble the DIY Corn Husk Wreath. Begin by adding hot glue to the base of the corn stalk leaf bundles and tucking it into the frame between the raffia. Angle the bundles to one side and attach the first leaf in the bundle to the previous bundle at the frame with a drop of hot glue. This will keep the leaves angled so they don’t separate.

Once you have the outside covered with the faux corn stalk bundles, attach the smaller corn husks to the inside rim of the wreath. Apply a line of hot glue at the bottom of each piece and attach on a slight angle. Allow the husks to overlap until the wreath is covered

Optional Sweet Gum Ball Enhancement

Finally, I decided to add some of the foraged sweet gum balls I have been collecting to the DIY corn husk wreath. To attach, I added a heavy amount of hot glue to each gum ball and placed it at the inside rim of the wreath. Then, I added another row of small corn husks to the inside of the wreath.

The final enhancement will give your wreath a realistic corn husk appearance. Use your hand to squeeze more wrinkles into the parchment paper husks. Twist the tips of the to make the ends curl and stand back. Doesn’t it look authentic?

Decorate With Faux Corn Husk Wreath

I originally planned to use the wreath on my front porch, which looks lovely here.

However, I decided to bring it inside to enhance our gallery wall in the stairway.

I love the cozy feeling the wreath adds to the farmhouse. What do you think?
