I was inspired to create this dried flower art when I saw vintage windows filled with dried flowers in a high-end boutique. I snapped a photo and started drying flowers for my creation. I have several large windows that I could use for the project; however, I wanted a smaller version. As summer faded into fall, I still had not found the perfect old window, so here’s what I did instead. Let me know what you think.

Dried Flower Art Inspiration

First, I want to share my inspiration for this dried flower art tutorial. I was shopping in Wilmington, NC, when I saw this vintage window with dried flowers. I immediately wanted to duplicate this look and knew I could make it for a fraction of this price. Although I didn’t use a window, my free version is just as stunning.

How To Make A Dried Flowers Frame?

Since I couldn’t find a small window to recreate this dried flower art, I decided to recycle a frame I’ve used for several projects. I had to make a few adjustments to make the frame work for holding the dried flowers. You can also use old picture frames or art frames for this project.

I had previously glued a sheet of white foam board to the back of my frame, so I cut the center out. Then, I glued a sheet of black foam board over the white, giving the frame a shadow box feel.

The DIY frame doesn’t have glass, so I was able to add the dried flowers after the frame was constructed. The black background will give the dried flowers a dramatic backdrop.

Insider Tip

If you want to use an old window to create framed dried flower wall art, you will need to attach a board or foam board to the back of the window frame. If the glass is still in the window, you will need to arrange your flowers and attach them to the board before attaching them to the window frame. You will also want to add a spacer between the foam board and the window frame to allow room for the dried flowers. You can use strips of the foam board to create a spacer. This will also be true for art and picture frames with glass.

Once your frame is ready, you can add your dried flowers. I began with some preserved moss. Using a hot glue gun, I added the moss to the recessed area at the bottom of the frame. Just add a bead of glue and tuck the moss inside the frame.

Now, you are ready to add the dried flowers. Begin by cutting the flower bud away from the stem. Then, trim your stems to fit the frame opening. Add your stems, then hot glue the flower bud to the top of the stem. Arrange your dried flowers at varying heights across the foam board.

Continue to fill in with smaller buds and leaves until you are happy with your design.

Framed Dried Flowers

While working on the dried flowers craft, I made another smaller version using a thrift store frame. This frame is unique because it’s very deep, and the opening is only 3 inches square. I began by adding a piece of foam board to the back of the frame, filling it with moss. Finally, I added the dried flower buds and leaves, allowing them to spill out from the frame.

The dried flower art will last several years when protected from direct sunlight. Don’t place your framed dried flowers in a sunroom, porch, or on a wall exposed to the sun as the blooms will begin to fade.

I hung the dried flower wall art on the wall next to my desk.

It brightens the space, and I continue to dry more flowers on the rack above the frame. There are so many ways to use dried flowers, and I love having them handy.
