What Is A Wall Basket?
You may be asking how I can identify a wall basket. There are several types of wall baskets that you can use to decorate your home. They come in all materials, shapes, and sizes, from flat plate-style baskets to gathering baskets. Flat baskets are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, from simple plate sizes to large rectangle woven trays. Gathering baskets make great wall planters, door wreaths, or handy wall caddies. Baskets with one flat side and a rounded front can be filled with flowers, towels, magazines, books, and more.
What Are Wall Baskets Made From?
Most vintage wall baskets are woven using natural materials such as wicker, reed, rattan, twigs, etc. They provide great texture for your home decor. You can find many new baskets made from jute, plastics, metal, and recycled materials.
I prefer vintage baskets or those made from natural materials. Baskets are always on my radar when shopping at thrift stores. The small woven twig wall basket you see below is a favorite thrift store find. It was $2.00, and due to its small size, I have been able to display it in several areas of the farmhouse.
Gathering Baskets
I have a weakness for vintage gathering baskets. Many of these baskets are designed to be carried on your back and are used to gather grapes, olives, or other fruits and vegetables. The large French basket is a favorite purchase from the French Farmer’s Wife. You can use this type of basket in so many ways to decorate your home. It adds interest when hanging on the wall, on a pegboard, on the top of a cabinet, or on the floor.
Another lucky find from the French Farmers Wife is this grape hod gathering basket. It is smaller than most I’ve seen, so it works well mixed with blue and white dishes on the dining room wall.
I used another large gathering basket to add wall decor to the front porch. I like to decorate it with seasonal stems and greenery.
Wall Baskets For Door Wreaths
Many of the smaller wall baskets work well as door wreaths. The baskets’ flat backsides allow them to stay in place even when doors open and close. The long-shaped basket below is a reproduction of a gathering basket and looks adorable on the porch bedroom door.
Another hanging basket idea is to use a handcrafted basket with a handle as a door wreath. By adding red tulips and a flag, the inexpensive thrift store find is perfect for decorating the porch with a patriotic touch.
Flat Woven Tray Baskets For Hanging
Another great wall display is to gather a collection of flat woven baskets or trays. You can hang them alone or mix them with other wall-hanging decorations.
For our Chinosierie-inspired Chinese dinner party, I decorated the wall with simple paper plate trays, paper lanterns, and napkin decoupage foam balls. They are grouped around a salvaged piece from an old wooden crate to add more character. Some of the same trays surround the grape gathering baskets filled with wooden breadboards and bowls.
This flat square basket helps create a vintage gallery wall on the stairs. I like to add seasonal decor, such as this preserved boxwood wreath, to the center of the flat tray.
Vintage Tobacco Baskets
Vintage tobacco baskets make great wall-hanging baskets, and their large dimensions create a rustic visual impact in your home. I have always wanted a large authentic one, but they are pretty large, and I’ve never found the perfect spot or the right price.
Authentic tobacco baskets are pricey, but many reproductions are more affordable. A smaller faux basket from Hobby Lobby perfectly fits a space under my staircase. In addition, I have a tobacco basket planter that I purchased from a boutique a few years ago. The reproduction pieces provide a lot of texture for the rustic wildflower arrangement. The best part is that you can use it as a wreath on the wall or a door. See Free Queen Anne’s Lace & Wild Fern Basket Arrangement for arrangement tips.
Bathroom Wall Basket Decor
The bathroom is another area of your home that can benefit from wall basket decor. You can utilize wall space to hang a basket and fill it with soaps, towels, facial supplies, and more.
This cute little white basket was a $2.00 thrift store find but looks like a chic bathroom accessory with faux greenery and rolled bath towels.
How To Hang Wall Baskets
There are many hanging basket ideas to style your home. If you are planning to hang your basket on the door, an adjustable over-the-door wreath hanger may be the best option. Another option is to use Command utility hook hangers. These hooks are easy to install and can be removed without damaging your walls.
These S Hooks are another great option for hanging on doors, peg racks, etc. I have ordered them multiple times and used them to hang wreaths, garlands, baskets, etc.
You can also use peg racks or wall shelves with hooks for hanging basket ideas. At our beach cottage, a basket filled with wooden kitchen utensils hangs from the repurposed pegboard while the accent wall pegboard holds a handcrafted wall basket filled with greenery.
