What Are The Benefits of Creating Outdoor Living Spaces
Want to expand your home? An outdoor living space extends your home’s interior living area and is designed to allow you to enjoy the great outdoors. Therefore, it can be a patio, deck, balcony, porch, poolside, outdoor kitchen, or any area in your yard that is furnished and decorated to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Outdoor living spaces allow you to relax, dine, entertain, and design a relaxing oasis around your own home.
Relaxing Benefits of Outdoor Spaces
Imagine unwinding after a long day on a comfy couch, surrounded by the gentle sounds of nature. Lush greenery, calming water features, and soft lighting can create a tranquil escape that promotes peace and rejuvenation.
Expand Your Entertaining Spaces
Many homes have limited space for entertaining guests. However, you don’t have to increase the size of your home to allow for entertaining space. Many of these ideas will help you expand your entertaining options and create lasting memories with an outdoor living space designed for fun. A spacious patio with comfortable seating, a fire pit for gathering around, and an outdoor kitchen for grilling up a feast can make your home the go-to spot for any social gathering.
Benefits For Family-Oriented Activities
Create a fun and functional space for the whole family to enjoy with an outdoor living space. Think picnic tables for outdoor meals, a hammock for relaxation, and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows. You can even incorporate play areas for children, like a sandbox or playset, to create a backyard retreat the whole family will love.
This great backyard playground includes solar string lights that keep the area safe for children after dark.

Next, let’s take a look at adding an outdoor kitchen to enhance your home.
Benefits Of Adding An Outdoor Kitchen To Your Home
There are many benefits to adding an outdoor kitchen to your home. They are both a functional and beneficial enhancement to your home. Whether you plan to add one for personal use or entertaining friends, it’s well worth the investment. Here are a few things to consider
- Turn your backyard into an entertaining oasis. Expand your space beyond the capacity of your indoor spaces. Guests can mingle around the cooking area, creating a more social and interactive atmosphere.
- Keep the heat out of the kitchen: Cooking outdoors will help reduce the mess and odors that fill your home while cooking. Plus, it potentially helps reduce cooling costs as your indoor spaces remain cooler.
- More cooking options: Go beyond the grill! Outdoor kitchens can incorporate features like pizza ovens, smokers, or specialty grills, allowing you to explore a wider range of culinary options.
- Outdoor Kitchen will increase your homes value: Outdoor kitchens can be a significant selling point, potentially adding value to your property when you decide to sell.
- Spending more quality time outdoors encourages more healthy activities with family.
Outdoor Kitchen Ideas
We created our outdoor kitchen within a cinder block cabin whose roof had fallen. However, due to the condition of the structure, we had originally planned to destroy it. Thankfully, a last-minute decision was made to save it and repurpose it into an outdoor kitchen. The interior provides space for the grill, smokers, bar-height tables, vintage appliances like the old refrigerator (which works like a charm), and a wood-burning cookstove that belonged to my aunt.
In addition, the patio area in front of the kitchen provides plenty of space for entertaining. If you’d like to know more about the kitchen, read: DIY Outdoor Kitchen – Incredible Before & After Transformation.
Many kitchens are close to other outdoor living spaces, which makes them an easy spot to entertain. You can consider creating an outdoor kitchen adjacent to your house, on a patio, or a deck.
Check out this rustic outdoor kitchen idea. It is ideal for those who have a larger backyard to build a separate structure.

Add A Fire Pit To Enhance Your Home
Adding a firepit is another way to enhance your home for cooler weather. We have one that overlooks the pond in front of the outdoor kitchen. It is a favorite spot to gather friends and family after one of Brad’s delicious grilled meals.
Firepits are easily added and a budget-friendly option to enhance your home. You can choose a real wood-burning fire pit or one that uses propane gas. They are easy to construct, and there are many options for purchasing one that’s already built.

Poolside, Pier, or Lakeside Outdoor Living
Do you love spending time outdoors and around water? Here are a few tips and ideas for creating and enhancing areas around the pool, pier, or lakeside.
Poolside Living
A favorite summer spot here at The Ponds Farmhouse is beside the pool. This year, we have made a few changes in the decor, including the addition of reclining poly Adirondack chairs and the cantilever umbrella.
We found a great deal on a cast aluminum dining set and painted the outdoor bar to match. The thrifted dining table originally cost $4,500. We were lucky to buy it second-hand for only $350.00, and it was in perfect condition. Shopping in thrift stores is a great way to get stylish furniture and decor to create a budget-friendly elegance for your spaces.
Resources For Poolside
Many pools are positioned next to porches and patios, which allows the area to be an extension of your indoor living areas.
Umbrellas and pool floats are a must when creating a relaxing atmosphere.

Lakeside Outdoor Spaces
After a day on the lake, no one wants to be indoors. Creating outdoor living spaces around the water will allow the water fun to continue into the evening.
A rustic firepit surrounded by cut log seating creates the perfect spot to end the day. Outdoor furniture for small spaces works well in this rustic setting.
Another way to create a relaxing lakeside retreat is the addition of outdoor tables and chairs for alfresco dining.
Pier Side
Although we are not on a lake, our property includes three ponds. The pier with a gazebo at the end is a perfect spot for late-evening relaxation or an intimate dinner for two.
These ideas of outdoor living space are budget-friendly with a rescued dining table, thrifted chairs, and a repurposed wagon wheel light fixture. They are inexpensive ways to add charm to the pier setting. Several natural wood Adirondack chairs add plenty of seating for late-evening cocktails.
DIY Greenhouse Outdoor Living Space For Entertaining
When we completed our DIY Greenhouse, I knew immediately that it would be a perfect spot for garden parties and girlfriend brunches. The center table, 8 feet long, was rescued from my father’s workshop.
What better way to use it than filling it with vintage dishes and concrete urns filled with flowers? You can see more details about this Spring Fling Dinner Party here, and also check out How We Built Our DIY Greenhouse without any experience.
My friend Stephanie recently added a greenhouse to her property and is enjoying the benefits of this creative space.
She is set up for a strawberry-themed dinner party, complete with a red and white checked tablecloth and fun string lights overhead.
I hope these ideas and tips for creative outdoor living spaces have inspired you to create your own relaxing oasis to enhance your home. Many of these outdoor living space ideas on a budget are easily duplicated. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to having a porch(es) all year round to make it cozy like you do. Honestly, I don't know how you keep all of your spaces so clean! I've pinned and seen some ideas I'm looking forward to incorporating around the farmhouse and home until I get that full-time porch. Great post. Happy summer!

Cindy, Thank you so much. One of my secrets is I pull my pillows and throw blankets inside when we go out of town. So they are not getting dirty for no good reason. LOL. I appreciate all your sweet comments.
