Do you have a stash of old vintage buttons? How about pulling out all the red, white, and blue buttons for some patriotic decorating? These 3 easy patriotic decorating ideas include a DIY button craft that you can make in about 30 minutes. Create stunning patriotic vignettes with these simple ideas, perfect for any patriotic holiday.
I have saved all my vintage buttons from when I was designing clothing. The first thing I did with each garment was remove the buttons. So when Cindy at County Road 407 suggested vintage buttons as the topic for her bi-monthly Lifestyle of Love series, I was excited to see what I could do with my stash. I had several thoughts, but I decided that something patriotic would be fun since Memorial Day is this month.
If you are joining me from my friend Lora at Lora Bloomquist Create & Ponder, welcome. I know you loved her easy ways to use vintage buttons for DIY decor.

Where Can You Get Vintage Buttons
Antique buttons are collector’s items and can be very expensive. Vintage buttons are more affordable and can be purchased at antique shops, vintage and consignment shops, and online at Etsy and eBay, for example.
Rare and unique buttons will likely be sold individually, whereas smaller, less unique buttons may be sold in bulk. I often see jars of buttons for sale in vintage and antique stores.
Red, White, and Blue Buttons
For today’s project and decorating ideas, I used my collection of red, white, and blue buttons. I will also share one DIY button craft using vintage buttons. For the craft project, I used mostly inexpensive standard buttons since I was gluing them together.
Patriotic Cloche
My first patriotic decor idea uses a white plate, red, white, and blue buttons, a glass cloche, and a vintage military photo.
Just fill the plate with the buttons and add the photo to the center. Use the buttons to help hold the old photo upright. Then, cover it with a glass cloche. Add a small flag behind the photo and surround the vignette with more flags for a patriotic display.
Vintage Button Vase
Another easy idea is to fill a clear flower vase or bud vase with vintage red, white, and blue buttons. Begin at the bottom with a layer of red, then white, and top with blue. You can also mix the buttons if you prefer. Then add flags to your vase for a fun patriotic centerpiece or add to a shelf.
You can also add a mixture of buttons to a plate or dish next to the vase for added style.
DIY Button Crafts
Finally, you can make DIY button crafts. There are several creative ideas, such as adding buttons to a pillow or adding to a picture frame. I decided to try something a little different, and I hope you like it.
First, gather a good supply of red, white, and blue buttons and 12 sheets of white card stock paper.
Begin by making three white paper roses. See the easy tutorial, Learn How To Make Paper Flowers.
Once you have completed the three roses, you will need glue to attach the buttons.
Begin by filling the center of each rose with several buttons of the same color. Then, use some of the smaller buttons to attach to random petals.
Patriotic Roses
Once all the glue is dry, you can style your roses. My original plan was to add the roses to some old rusty mattress springs to create a grouping of three roses.
I think they look cute like this. However, I decided to try another approach.
Vintage Button Roses
Next, I added the three vintage button roses to a bowl with some DIY decoupage decorative balls.
They look so festive with several mini flags in a vintage flower frog. The DIY star garland adds the finishing touch to the vignette in our entryway.
Which is your favorite way to style the white roses with vintage buttons? Either way, this easy patriotic craft will be fun to use for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and again on Labor Day. They can be displayed together or separately or on other occasions.

Your r/w/b loose buttons really catch your eye in the cloche and draw you in. Love the mix of the buttons in the little vase with flags, too. So many great ideas. Hard to imagine patriotic decor is upon us!!

I am so tempted to just go buy new blue and red buttons so I can fill a vase and put flags in it!!! And the cloche with those old photos looks amazing.
