Easy Hydrangea Basket Tutorial

Fresh blue hydrangeas, bud vases, pruning shears, vintage basket and artificial ferns

I have had several questions about this basket arrangement and thought I’d share how I put it together with you. So here is a tutorial on how to make this easy hydrangea basket and keep your flowers watered. Although there are several options for nourishing your flowers, I’m sharing how to make this easy arrangement with what I have on hand.

I love using rustic elements and lots of texture on my tables. I was inspired to refresh my summer table with beautiful hydrangeas from my garden, and I shared that post earlier this week. However, I wanted to display them in a basket instead of the traditional vase. I appreciate all the comments and questions about this Summer Blues tablescape.

Supplies Needed To Make Hydrangea Basket

For this arrangement, I decided to use a couple of faux ferns in addition to the fresh hydrangeas. To hold the hydrangeas, I used a few small bud vases. I also used some tin cans as risers.

For larger baskets, I have used small tin cans instead of vases. Anything that fits into the basket and holds water will work.

What Type of Basket Is Best For Flower Arrangements

I love to collect vintage baskets from thrift stores, so I have a good supply. If you are making an arrangement with fresh flowers, I recommend using a basket with a flat bottom for the best success. You don’t want the basket to tip over, and the water to spill.

Prepare Your Hydrangeas

Begin by removing excess leaves and stems because you want the stem to fit comfortably in the vase.

Remove leaves and cut stems on hydrangeas to fit in bud vases.

You also want to cut the stem on an angle, using pruning shears, before placing in the individual vases.

I filled each small vase with water before placing the stems inside.

Tutorial

For this tutorial arrangement the ferns are on one side and the hydrangeas are on the other side of the basket. To vary the height of the ferns, place one of the tin cans upside down and place one of the ferns on top.

Add tin cans as risers to hold the faux ferns at different levels within the basket
After I began, I realized my original basket was too small, so I found another basket to accommodate the hydrangea arrangement.

Add Fresh Flowers

Because the vases looked crowded with more than one stem, each bloom received it’s own individual bud vase.

Add one large hydrangea stem to each bud vase

Once again, place something inside the basket to vary the heights. These are just empty tuna cans placed upside down and they work great.

Fill basket with recycled tin cans as risers.

Begin to add the hydrangeas in a eye pleasing arrangement to the other side of the basket.

step by step tips to arrange your hydrangeas in a basket.

As you can see, some of the vases will be placed on the risers, and some will sit in the bottom of the basket. If you are working with a larger basket, you may need to use risers of varying heights and more hydrangeas. You can use tin cans, plates, bowls, etc., as risers in the basket. Ensure the basket is filled so the risers are not visible.

I love how this turned out. The color on those hydrangeas is stunning. I've tried for years to grow them with no luck. Brown thumbs prevail again. Ugh. Hope your Sunday is wonderful.
