Instead of throwing old books away, consider what you can do with them.

First, you can remove damaged covers and tie a few together with ribbon or jute twine. They are great for adding to bookshelves or table vignettes.

Some books are beyond salvaging, but the pages are still useful.

DIY Old Book Leaf Craft Tutorial

The great thing about the Dollar Tree Woodcrafts cutouts is that they require little to no prep work to start your projects. For this design, I removed the raffia bow from the wooden leaves.

To begin this leaf craft project, locate some old book pages. I have several books that are falling apart, and I like the ones that have yellowed with age. You need pages that are large enough to cover the smaller leaf on the cutout.

Trace the leaf design

You will want to trace the leaf onto the book page. Begin by laying the page over the small portion of the leaf.

Next, use a pencil or brush handle and rub around the edges. This will leave a trace of the leaf or indention on the paper.

Finally, an exacto knife was used to cut the leaf design from the book page. This will leave a ragged edge, which is the look I want for this project.

You can cut the design with scissors if you would rather have a smooth edge.

Stain or Paint the Larger portion of the leaf

Now, you can paint the larger portion of the leaf in your desired color. I chose to use Rub N Buff wax in Antique gold.

Brush the wax onto the leaf until the area is covered, and use a small cloth or paper towel to buff until all areas look even. Don’t worry if the wax gets on the smaller leaf, as it will be covered with the book page.

Fold and Crinkle Leaves For Leaf Craft Project

For this leaf craft project, you want to give the leaves an aged look. You can begin by folding the leaf in half and then wading it up to crinkle it.

Please make sure to smooth the leaf as much as possible before adhering to the woodcraft cutout.

Decoupage the old book page

Next, apply a liberal amount of Mod Podge to the small portion of the wooden leaf.

Press the old book page leaf onto the Mod Podge, aligning the two leaves.

Add mod podge to decoupage the old book page leaf for a rustic fall decoration.

Then, apply another generous coat of Mod Podge over the top of the paper.

One application is usually enough; however, if you notice any areas that don’t adhere, apply a second coat.

Once the Mod Podge has completely dried, cut any excess paper that overlaps the wooden leaf.

Then, use a small amount of dark wax around the edges of the book page leaf. The edges of the design don’t have to be perfect. The wax will help to give the leaves a rustic, aged appearance.

In addition, the wax adds a burnt appearance to the edges of the paper.

How To Decorate with Old Book Page Wooden Leaves

You can use your book page wooden leaves to decorate your home for fall in several ways. They look great hanging from a wooden shelf or peg board.

They would also look good as place cards on a fall tablescape.

However, I decided to use mine at the end of my staircase banister.

To do so, tie each leaf to a length of jute twine.

Allow the leaves to drop down from each other with a slight overlap. Then, tie the twine to the banister and make a bow with additional jute.

It was a simple and inexpensive project that cost less than $5.00.
