Welcome To My Cozy Front Porch
Y’all know that I love a big front porch. In fact, I consider our porch to be the entry of our home. Once you pass through the front doors, you are inside the living room.
Therefore, the front porch is where we welcome our guests, and we designed and decorated it as an extension of our living area.
We have added several DIY projects that help to create a cozy feeling on the white farmhouse porch.
- The first project was the DIY Address Sign made from reclaimed shiplap boards.
- When we couldn’t find tall shutters for the doors, we made these DIY Shutters to fit.
- The faux galvanized planters were inspired by our vintage grape hod.
I love how the DIY address sign is enhanced by the shed leaves garland and corn stalks.
In addition, Rudy loves to take center stage on the front porch. He blends perfectly with the corn stalks, fall leaves, pumpkins, and mums surrounding the front doors.
How Do You Create A Cozy Front Porch?
First, the definition of cozy is: “giving a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation”!
Therefore, creating a cozy feeling on a porch requires comfortable seating with plenty of pillows and blankets for cool fall weather.
Adding rugs, subdued lighting, and plenty of florals and pumpkins will help up the cozy factor.
So let’s break down each element.
Rocking Chairs
Rocking chairs are just an invitation to have a seat and sit a spell. Am I right?
We have filled our front porch with several Kennedy Rocking Chairs for comfortable seating and to help create a welcoming environment.
With the addition of throw blankets, they are easy to rearrange to meet the seating needs of our guests.
Throw Blankets
In addition to comfortable seating, another front porch idea is to add a few throw blankets. You will linger longer and feel more relaxed when you are not cold.
This is especially important during the cooler fall days. You will see several throw blankets scattered around the porch all year long.
The gold chunky throw blanket is cozy, and the color enhances the other porch decor. In addition, the blankets add lots of texture to the porch decor.
Front Porch Idea – Cozy Rugs
Adding rugs to your front porch is another way to create that cozy, warm feeling.
They also help to create seating areas as you will see around the porch swing.
At the front door, I’ve layered the front door rug with a warmer-colored leaf rug for fall.
Can you see Rudy in the photo? LOL! He blends right in with the rug, doesn’t he?
Front Porch Ideas – Fall Wreaths
Wreaths are no longer just for Christmas! Most people tend to have a wreath on their door year-round.
Therefore, adding a fall wreath to your door is another way to make your home feel welcoming to guests.
I rarely add wreaths to my doors because I love the view from the french doors. However, I almost always have wreaths hanging on either side.
Last year we installed these DIY door shutters, which make a perfect resting spot for the wreaths from Floral Treasure.
Candles & Subdued Lighting
Nothing ruins the atmosphere more than harsh lighting. Therefore, I love adding plenty of candlelight to the front porch.
This can include battery-operated candles or real candles.
We also installed dimmers light switches on the lantern shape lights by the doors.
Porch Swing
Who can resist a porch swing? You can definitely begin the relaxation process after only a few minutes in a swing.
A large front porch allows me to have a swing in this seating area by our master bedroom.
However, if your space is more limited, opt for a bench or a love seat for additional seating.
Fall Porch Ideas – Corn Stalks
I recently shared how to make a corn stalk garland, and I love the cozy feel it gives to the swing.
Corn stalks are a great way to decorate for fall. They really warm up a porch, and if you’re lucky, you can get them for free.
Place a bundle beside your doors or wrap them around a porch post. This video shows how I’ve used them to fill my planters.
In addition to the corn stalk garland, I shared these cute corn stalk topiaries for inside the house.
Pumpkins
While we are on the subject of fall decor, you have to have some pumpkins.
I love using both corn stalks and pumpkins on the porch. Because our fall can be warm, I use a mix of both natural and faux.
I have only added a few real pumpkins this year because the temperatures have just started to dip.
This trio of real pumpkins makes up the centerpiece for the coffee table, along with an urn filled with marigolds.
I wrapped a garland of faux berries around the pumpkins to pull the centerpiece together.
The DIY Faux Galvanized Planters are filled with corn husks, faux autumn ferns, and faux pumpkins. The evening sun is intense, and real pumpkins would not last long in these planters.
Mums For Front Porch Decor
Another front porch decor idea is to add mums. However, just like the pumpkins, you must wait for cooler temperatures.
In addition, their blooming season is limited; if you purchase in full bloom, you will not be able to enjoy them for long.
I couldn’t resist adding one that was blooming. However, the others that you see here will look great before long.
Pillows
Don’t you just love pillows? It’s one of the easiest ways to update a space on a budget.
Notice how the fall pillows draw your attention to the porch swing.
My best advice is to purchase pillow covers whenever possible. Switch out the pillow fillers seasonally, and you can easily store lots of pillow covers.
String Lights
I love adding subdued lighting. We talked about candlelight and adding dimmers to your outdoor light fixtures; however, adding some string lights or twinkle lights also helps.
The porch is surrounded by Edison bulb string lights that are dimmable. I love how pretty they make the porch look.
In addition, I have twinkle lights on the swing garland.
The subtle addition of these tiny lights makes the porch feel cozy as we watch the sun disappear.

Rachel, your front porch is so perfect for fall. I’d be happy to have half your space. All your details add to the warm and cozy atmosphere. Love the pillows, throws and rugs. Love the cornstalks, too. Your sweet pup looks a lot like ours. They do blend in to fall colors.
