Best Ideas for Decorating a Porch for Fall
My Best Ideas for Decorating a Porch for Fall revolve around my front porch seating area and front doors. I updated a few pieces and added a few new items, but for the most part, I shop at home for items to move from one place to another. Now, even old decor feels fresh and new.
Fall has arrived on the porch, and I’m so excited to be joining the 2021 Harvest Home Blog Tour hosted by Kristi at French Creek Farmhouse. You are in for so much inspiration. Be sure to check out all links at the end of this post.
I hope you will be inspired by these simple ideas for porch decorating.

Decorating a Porch for Fall
The inspiration for our seating area came from these gorgeous sizzling shed leaves garland, shedding leaves stem, and candle ring wreath from Piper Classics. When I received them, I immediately knew that I wanted a subdued fall porch.

Top 3 Tips for Fall Porch Decorating
- Shop at Home First – Items in a new location can feel fresh and new.
- Shop Thrift Stores for items that you don’t mind getting damaged.
- Add a few new items that inspire you.
Moving things around
When I begin to decorate the front porch for fall, I start by taking an inventory of what I already have that will work with my vision. I always shop at home before I venture online or to the stores.
Previously, I made a garland using gathered grapevine and twinkle lights for the porch swing. This year I added the shedding leaves garland to the existing grapevine for this fall design.
The garland is perfect for decorating the porch and drawing attention to the porch swing.

Something about these subdued colors reminded me of this old wooden crate and vintage pottery jug I pulled from inside the house. Once I had them arranged, the rest just fell into place.

The combination of blues and rust in the outdoor rug works well with the front porch’s soft, neutral colors for fall.

One of my favorite finds is this thrifted hurricane candle holder. It is perfect to showcase this beautiful candle ring as a focal point on the side table. The combination of fall leaves and soft candlelight adds the perfect glow to the front porch decorated for fall.

I added the pottery crock to the inside of the wooden crate and filled it with the stems from Piper Classics. The vintage pottery jug anchors the other side of the crate.
Finally, a few faux pumpkins fill the remaining space.
The crate lid serves as a tray for additional decor display.
Crate Decorating Tip
If you have a deep box or crate, you can use risers, books, or candleholders within the box to bring items up to eye level.

The seat cushions and pillows are all repeats from previous years but rearranged for a fresh look.
I love the cozy feel of this gathering spot. Our evening views are enhanced by the subdued landscape lighting from AQ Lighting.

Ideas for Decorating a Porch Cabinet for Fall
Another favorite area to decorate is our rustic vintage cabinet. This doorless find is filled with garden terra cotta pots, baskets, and outdoor copper pieces. These warm colors add to the fall feel.
A small thrift store wreath is combined with a foraged grapevine wreath to add some drama above the cabinet. See FREE Fall Decorating Ideas here.

One of my best tips for adding decor to your porch cabinets and tables is to shop in thrift stores. Items left outdoors can be easily damaged. Therefore, if you want to use inexpensive items, thrift stores are a great resource. See Best Thrift Store Decor Ideas for more tips.

Decorating The Front Porch Doors
In addition to our seating area, I couldn’t resist updating the area around our front doors.
I have used these shutters here for several seasons, however this year I decided to turn them around and paint the backside with graphite chalk paint by Annie Sloan.
The new color completely changes the feel of the porch! If you’re not familiar with chalk paint, you might like this post – How to Use Chalk Paint.

For this update, I placed the newly painted shutters inside a vintage, galvanized tubs and filled them with faux fall fern stems.
In addition, the new color makes the front door hardware really stand out.

Updated Front Porch Decor
Continuing the reuse and repurpose theme, the wreaths have repeated Floral Treasures decor. I’ve used these wreaths for three seasons now, and they still look great. The new graphite backdrop really makes them pop and feel fresh and new. You can shop for the black and beige rug here.

A DIY sign and vintage jug help to anchor the area beside the door. You can see last year’s Fall Porch here.

I got so many questions about our address sign, so I recently shared the How to Make an Address Sign tutorial.

Another must-have on my porch is cozy throw blankets and cushions on the rockers. They help to create an inviting atmosphere that says, “Come on over and sit a spell”.

Using a combination of vintage decor, thrift store finds, and new items helps to create a unique, cozy feel around the front doors.
I also love to decorate the DIY Greenhouse for Fall, and you can see the 2020 Fall Tour here.

Finally, my favorite time of day is evening, just as the lights come on but it’s not completely dark. Fall is in the air, and sitting here watching the sun sink behind the mountain is a favorite evening pastime.
Grab a blanket and join me.
