Fall Decorating Ideas for Outdoors: Porches
First, my favorite place to decorate seasonally is the front porch. I’ve shared many times that a large front porch was a priority when planning and building our forever home.
This porch decor is one of the all-time favorite fall decorating ideas.
The vintage galvanized tubs are filled with corn stalks gathered from a neighbor’s field. They surround two old shutters, each holding a beautiful fall wreath from Floral Treasure.
In addition to the porch lanterns, a small string of twinkle lights helps to illuminate the DIY address sign above the door.
The best part of this front porch design was the free corn stalks, which can be discarded once the season is over.
To add corn stalks to your porch posts, begin by placing them inside containers. Next, completely circle the post with the stalks and secure it with simple, tightly tied twine.
Another fun touch is to add an overturned vintage fruit basket, allowing faux apples to spill onto the porch. Nestle them amongst the many pumpkins and mums.
In addition to the natural corn stalks and corn husks, a vintage container full of pussy willow stems, and both real and faux pumpkins were added to the porch.
Another tip is to vary the height of items in your vignettes. Using items like old stools, planters, books, and other items with varying heights will help make your displays more interesting.
This view of the pond from inside the house has always been a favorite of mine.
Easy Front Porch Decorating
After filling the porch with corn stalks, I toned down the decorations the next year using the same wreaths, faux pumpkins, and fall ferns.
As the years rolled on, the shutters were painted black to showcase the wreaths in a new light. A darker rug helps to balance the new fall porch decor.
Once the shutters were painted black, we decided to add tall door shutters. Finding vintage shutters tall enough for the doors was a challenge, so we eventually decided to transform the original shutter in this easy DIY makeover. Along with the faux galvanized planters, the porch has a whole new feeling.

Ideas for Fall Decorating: Porch Seating Area
Another seating area that’s fun to decorate is next to the master bedroom doors. A primitive cabinet stands next to the French doors and holds a collection of clay pots and copper pieces.
In addition, vintage baskets, a fall framed needlepoint piece, and more fall pumpkins help to round out the corner filled with inexpensive thrifted finds.
Shades of orange and blue help to create a cozy and relaxing spot to enjoy cooler fall temps on the porch. Adding lots of pillows and throw blankets allows you to cuddle up and watch the fall sunset.
Sprinkle a few fall leaves onto the tables and around the pumpkins to enhance the fall atmosphere on your porches.
Corn stalks with twinkle lights are draped around the porch swing, lighting up this evening’s view of the porch seating area.
This year, the porch is filled with pumpkins, mums, faux fall leaves, and ferns, in addition to the natural corn stalks. A basket of freshly gathered acorns is nestled in a pumpkin-filled metal cloche, and a mini doll’s chair is perfect for holding a small pumpkin. See the full tour on Best Ideas for Decorating A Fall Porch.
Fresh pumpkins mixed with fake ones and a swing draped with a cornstalk garland create a cozy porch seating area.
Rust accents warm up the seating area with fall florals from Piper Classics. The swing is decorated with gorgeous leaf garlands and twinkle lights. See the full tour of the porch at Best Ideas for Decorating A Fall Porch
Screened Porch Decorated for Fall
Another area to enjoy cooler fall evenings is the screened porch. The old ice cream churn was a roadside find and is filled with black-eyed Susans from the garden.
More throw blankets and pillows are ready when the temperatures drop.
A collection of amber bottles with faux vintage labels brightens the area around the dining table. The combination of dried flowers and pumpkins makes for charming porch decor.
Decorating the screen porch for fall is a joy because the weather is perfect this time of year to enjoy the porch.
Rudy loves the porch year-round, but it’s so much more pleasant as fall approaches. See more details at Decorating a Screen Porch for Fall.
Outdoor Fall Decorating: Pier Dining
Let’s not forget about decorating the pier when fall arrives. As the trees begin to turn color, the pier is a great spot to enjoy the fall season.
Whether the table is set with late-evening appetizers, a glass of wine, or an alfresco meal, the pier is used heavily year-round.
This cozy dinner table setting includes a plaid table runner, a few snacks for appetizers, and pumpkin-embossed plates. Rudy was just a puppy at this fall event.
DIY Greenhouse/She Shed Outside Fall Decorating Ideas
This photo was from the first fall in the greenhouse/she shed. The idea of filling the front porch with ALL the pumpkins seemed like a great idea. LOL
The porch is filled with pumpkins, DIY birdhouses, mums, and other fall plants. Multiple candles and string lights enhance the gathered items, making everything glow as the evening approaches.
There was no need to decorate around the exterior of the greenhouse because many late summer garden blooms were holding on for the photo shoot.
In addition, the doors are thrown open to invite you inside for the first Fall Greenhouse Tour and more fall decorating ideas.
Many dried blooms are hanging from the rafters and stored in thrift store baskets.
In addition, the DIY apothecary cabinet holds Dollar Tree decoupaged pumpkins, a basket filled with ferns, and my mama’s old watering can.
Another fun fall decorating tip is to use fresh persimmon stems loaded with beautifully colored fruit.
The worktable centerpiece is a huge thrifted amber vase filled with stems gathered from the many trees on our property.
Dining In Greenhouse For Fall
Fall in the greenhouse or she shed is magical. The lighting is so subdued compared to spring and summer. Adding the warm colors of fall with florals and dishes turns the space into a cozy haven.
Last year, we created a Friendsgiving table filled with organic materials from the garden, such as dried sedum autumn joy, ferns, and dried gourds. Mini pumpkins and thrifted dinnerware gave the table a warm and cozy feel for Thanksgiving.
Outdoor Entertaining Area: The Outdoor Kitchen
Fall may be the best time for entertaining in the outdoor kitchen, so decorating this area for fall is so much fun.
The DIY table runners are hand-painted and custom-made to fit each of the outdoor tables. A buffet table was set up for a “help yourself” Pulled Pork Nacho Dinner Party last fall.
Another fall table setting includes Cheap Outdoor Table Ideas like this DIY earthenware vessel made from an inexpensive thrifted vase. The vase is filled with late-summer flowers and foliage gathered from the garden to form a fall centerpiece.
Mixing and matching dinner plates is perfectly acceptable when you don’t have enough of one pattern for a dinner party.
The Golden Wheat pattern is a favorite for fall, and combining it with other thrift store collections makes for an interesting outdoor fall table.
Another budget-friendly table idea is to fill small clay pots with fall plants and add them to an outdoor table as a fall centerpiece.
We love to entertain at our outdoor kitchen. The evenings are shorter, and the firepit is where the dinner party ends. See more about these Fall Outdoor Kitchen Table Ideas.
Lighting for Outdoor Areas
A few years ago, we hosted a fall dinner party and decided to make portable string light posts. The posts can be repositioned to provide light to the exact area needed for your fall parties.
In addition, the days are much shorter once fall arrives, and adding string lights really helps to illuminate the dining tables.
Note: I recommend using lightweight lights. Anything heavy will tip the portable posts.
Entertaining outdoors in the fall is just the best, however lighting can be a challenge and the string lights keep everything cozy but well lit.
That was at least 25 Fall Outdoor Decorating ideas to get you started. But don’t leave yet—up next is Kim from Cottage in the Mitten with her easy fall lantern tutorial.
